Maintenance Mechanic II

POSITION DESCRIPTION:

Under general supervision, the Maintenance Mechanic II is responsible for making a variety of general repairs to existing Zoo infrastructure and systems, as well as other maintenance duties such as painting and building basic structures for staff, guests and animals.  

POSITION DUTIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

• Responsible for general maintenance on Zoo buildings, animal exhibits and guest areas, including basic repairs, painting and building basic structures: 70%

• Assists other maintenance staff with completion of generated work orders related to a variety of mechanical trades, including plumbing, electrical, carpentry, welding, HVAC, etc: 20%

• Assists maintenance manager in implementing and executing preventive maintenance programs: 5%

• Assists with snow removal during winter months: 5%

*This position may at times be requested to perform other duties or special projects as assigned, which are in the best interest of the Kansas City Zoo.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

• EDUCATION & FORMAL TRAINING:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

• EXPERIENCE:

  • Minimum of 5 years’ general maintenance or carpentry experience preferred.

  • Knowledge of and experience using various power tools and maintenance equipment.

• OTHER MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must have valid driver’s license.

  • Must be able to lift 75 pounds.

  • Must be able to stand for extended periods of time, climb, bend and stoop.

  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays and evening hours, in all weather extremes.

  • Must pass a background and drug screening.
